*Setting the Stage through the Habits of Mind
*
* *Dear Colleagues
Teacher work and school change efforts are becoming increasingly
more complex and difficult to manage in the knowledge economy of the
21st century. The Australian National Schools Network (ANSN) has a
proud 30 year history of working side by side with schools and
tertiary education institutes in response to the needs of the
teaching profession. Our network has grown a reputation built on
honouring and valuing teachers: we listen to what you want;
tailoring professional learning opportunities to support your
context. Currently we offer a number of options for schools to
begin or continue their learning with Habits of Mind*, through the
Setting the Stage hub
<http://www.ansn.edu.au/files/SettingStageHub_web.pdf>(click to
download a flyer with further information).
<http://www.ansn.edu.au/files/SettingStageHub_web.pdf> The learning
focus is through partnership and our feedback from previous projects
indicates that this is why schools continue to invest in
professional learning for their staff with the ANSN: If you have
trouble downloading the flier from this enews, a copy can be
obtained from our website www.ansn.edu.au

Professional Learning Options:
/*Attend 2 day intensive program based on gaining awareness of
attitudes and perceptions for learning and the development of
dispositions (Habits of Mind) for thinking. Have the option to
attend the remaining 3 days as part of an action learning hub.
*/
Teachers attending this 2 day intensive program have the option of
joining the 5 day action learning hubs days 3,4 and 5 at a reduced
hub cost. First of the 2 day intensive program is being held at *
Morayfield SHS, Brisbane on the 16th and 17th of March, 2009*. Cost

non-members. To register for the 2 day workshop email Hanan
Harrison on hanan.harrison at ansn.edu.au

* participation in our 5 day action learning hubs where schools
locally and nationally work collaboratively over a period of
time to explore an identified issue or need either within a
schoolwide context or specific to teachers own professional
practice. This project aims to develop a collegial network of
innovative teachers that provides practical opportunities for
participants to build on existing knowledge and skills and
analyse their own and their colleague's teaching practices
with a view to improving learning in our schools (see setting
the stage flier for more details)
<http://www.ansn.edu.au/habits_of_mind_hub>
* critical friend model, where the ANSN works with a single
school or a smaller cluster on identified common issues, with
an intended outcome of building whole school awareness of HoM,
reflection on current practice and a model for whole school
implementation.
* 1 day to half day information sessions at your school that aim
to give participants an introduction to the Habits of Mind
*The ANSN concurrently offers action learning hubs that focus on the
McREL Dimensions of Learning framework, Habits of Mind is dimension

Background:
The ANSN is a not for profit organisation with a social justice
ethos that has been offering quality professional learning programs
and project initiatives since the late 1970s when it grew out of the
Disadvantaged Schools Program (DSP). The ANSN continues to network
with schools, education systems and individuals across the country
to offer leading edge professional learning packages. We work with
educators from a range of contexts, Kindergarten through to Senior
Secondary.
Art Costa continues to *support *and *mentor* opportunities to grow
the ANSN Habits of Mind work, as he has done since 2002, and the
ANSN looks forward for taking this professional learning in new
directions with Australian schools.
*What is Action Learning?* -- Participants through dialogue,
reflection and sharing solve real problems that are related to your
context, issues and needs.
*Why Action Learning?* - The action learning approach is based upon
the premise that no learning occurs unless action and reflection is
taken. This program goes beyond providing participants with new
information; it requires participants to explore and implement new
ideas, possible solutions and/or strategies that promote improved
student learning outcomes and team approaches to curriculum planning.
If you or your team wish to investigate the ANSN projects and
learning opportunities further, please visit our website at

hanan.harrison at ansn.edu.au <mailto:hanan.harrison at ansn.edu.au> or

The ANSN action learning model for hubs ensures that our colleagues

conversations can focus on professional challenges, building current
repertoires of practice and celebrating successes.
